Walking Route 'On the Other Side' with Virtual Experience Point at the Big Church

Over 80 years ago, the tower of the Big Church in Venray was destroyed. Church towers were strategically important during World War II. From high above, one could see every movement in the area, from the distant front lines to life on the street just below. An ideal spot for observation posts.

At the bench of "Venray Remembers - On the Other Side" near the Big Church, you can experience a story that highlights two perspectives on this event. With your smartphone, you project both individuals into the surroundings, becoming a witness to how the two boys may have struggled with their helplessness. The destruction, characters, and objects in the story are based on real events. For example, in the experience, you will see the actual logbook of the Germans that was found among the rubble after the destruction. The encounter and dialogue between the two boys are not historical facts but a representation of the inner struggle and powerlessness that many people felt at the time.

The experience point is part of the walking route "On the Other Side." This walk of over 10 km takes you around the center of Venray, passing various landmarks with a wartime history. You will visit places such as the Venray War Cemetery (British military cemetery) and the former psychiatric institutions of Sint Anna and Sint Servaas.

The walking route "On the Other Side" and information about other routes from Venray Remembers can also be found in the new leaflet "Venray Remembers, Routes and Experience Points." It will be available from Friday, October 18, at various locations, including the VVV Venray.

You can also find the route online here on our website.
