Church towers were strategically important during World War II. From high above, you had a clear view of every movement in the surrounding area — from the distant front lines to the life on the streets below. An ideal spot for observation posts.
At the bench near the St. Petrus’ Banden church, you can experience the virtual story of a German soldier in the tower: Roland Johler, and how he wished to save a church. You'll also hear the perspective of a boy from Venray, Leo Jansen, who feels powerless as his town is destroyed.
If the church tower is open, you can climb it. Inside, you can view the exhibition about the destruction and reconstruction of the tower and Venray. At the top, you'll have a beautiful view.
Then, follow the walking route in this brochure, which passes several landmarks with a wartime history. You will visit places such as the Venray War Cemetery (British military cemetery) and the former psychiatric institutions of Sint Anna and Sint Servaas.
