War has a devastating impact—on people, society, life, and buildings. Blitterswijck Castle was also destroyed in the ravages of war, leaving little more than a small ruin. The Kasteelpark Blitterswijck Foundation is a citizen initiative dedicated to breathing new life into the neglected castle ruin in Blitterswijck. Volunteers have already rebuilt the castle gate and bridge. The foundation is preparing a project to develop the site into a castle park. An important part of the project is to uncover the ruin, which is still largely buried underground. The foundation plans to place a structure over it to outline the contours of the original fortress.
To make the location accessible even before the project starts, a unique virtual experience has been developed in collaboration with Venray Remembers. Using the Venray Remembers app on your smartphone, you can bring Baroness Arnoldina Margaretha Mackay, one of the former residents of the castle, to life on the castle avenue in front of the park. She will guide you through the question, “Where has the castle gone?” At four experience points, the baroness will tell you how the 14th-century fortress transformed into a castle. You will also learn why there is a Protestant church at the beginning of the castle avenue, how the castle became a monastery, and, ultimately, how it was destroyed.
You can find this short walk and more information here on the website.
