Do you really want to see and experience how our liberators lived and temporarily lived and worked in 1944? The Lucky Seventh Historical Group Foundation (L7), named after the 7th American Armored Division) has set up a site behind McDonald's in Venray (between Venray and Holthees) for this purpose. Original positions from that time have been excavated, furnished and manned again.
During the 2nd World War, from September 1944 to March 1945, our region of North Limburg and East Brabant was front area. The front stagnated and the Meuse as a frontline was for a long time a natural division between fear/oppression and freedom. This period was a horror not only for the residents, whether or not evacuated from our region, but also for our liberators, the British and American soldiers, it was absolutely a catastrophe that autumn and harsh winter in 1944-1945. Close to the front were the gun emplacements and trenches. Behind the front, among other things, the care of the wounded, but also the relaxation. But it takes so much more to care for these soldiers. Think of logistics, fuel depot, mobile workshop, engineer, field kitchen, radio station, field hospital. You can see all this temporarily at the event 'Lest We Forget'.
In the weekend of 1 and 2 October, the site is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for everyone, young and old, who is interested in the history of the 2nd World War. In the week before, the site is visited by groups 7 & 8 of various primary schools in the region.
This educational event is 'non-profit' in design and would not be possible without sponsorship. The visitor is asked a small entrance fee of € 5.00 (children up to 12 years € 2.00) per day.
