In World War II, the Germans built checkpoints where they used large searchlights and radars to intercept Allied aircraft coming in from England to bomb the Ruhr area. Nearby was a small building to accommodate the six to eight Wehrmacht soldiers who were operating the checkpoint, hence the term ‘Wehrmacht house.’ Three such houses can be found in Venray: At Pauwweg in Oirlo, at Janslust in Heide, and at Overloonseweg in Venray. Even though most of the houses are run-down, they remain a special memento of World War II.
