(Former) Peace Church

The Christ the King Church, better known as Peace Church, is a former church at Kennedyplein in Venray.

The Peace Church was built in 1964 as a church for all denominations: A meeting point where religious boundaries blur and the idea of peace plays a central role. The church could also serve as a convention centre for international meetings discussing peace.

Pastor Gerrits was the key pioneer in the realisation of this church, which received substantial financial support from abroad from war friends and enemies. The church opened on 25 October 1964. A peace monument and a 17-meter-high concrete bell tower with 18 bells were built on the square in front of the church in 1970.

However, the church was not used as a peace centre but mainly as a parish church. Due to the declining church attendance, the building could not be maintained as a church. In 2001, a demolition permit was granted but protests prevented the tearing down. Home care agency ‘Thuiszorg Noord-Limburg’ opened its offices here after a renovation. The former Peace Church is now a municipal monument.
