The mill in Merselo was built in 1867. The years 1940-45 were very difficult. Frans Michels, the oldest son of the miller, clandestinely ground the flour at night for the people in hiding and for others who lacked food stamps. He housed about 80 people in hiding in the mill and warned of an impending raid by placing the mill wings in the ‘unsafe’position. Merselo was liberated on 16 October 1944. Unfortunately, Frans wasn’t given much time to enjoy the freedom as he was hit by enemy fire during an exploration tour.
